Sununu should explain
Gov. Chris Sununu needs to explain his position on key voting issues.
Voting is both a citizen responsibility and a Constitutional right. Both are highly valued in NH.
Governor Sununu made the right move to promote voting when he signed HB 1266, allowing absentee voting in 2020 due to concerns about Covid-19. At age 83, I share those concerns and I am voting by mail. Sununu said people should feel confident in using the USPS for voting.
In view of his support for HB 1266, I wonder why he
• Vetoed the “Coronavirus Election Protection Act ” (HB 1672. 2020). The bill, as amended by the Senate, allows any voter to vote by absentee ballot, allows town officials to start processing ballots before Election Day, and authorizes online voter registration.
• Pushed a voter suppression bill (SB 3, 2018) that a NH Court ruled unconstitutional because it unlawfully discriminated against low income citizens, young people, and college students. The Court found that “the law simply imposes additional burdens on legitimate voters.”
• Pushed a bill aimed at discouraging out-of-state college students from voting here (HB 1264, 2018),
• Vetoed a bipartisan bill to end gerrymandering and to reduce the influence of money in politics (HB 706, 2019), and
• Vetoed no-excuse absentee voting (HB 1672, 2020, HB 611, 2019).
I hope in the lead up to the general election, he will explain why he supports gerrymandering, wants to place limits on the rights of citizens to vote, and resists modernization in voter registration and absentee voting.
