‘Come let us reason together’

By Betty O’Toole - Nashua | Aug 22, 2020

Your Sunday, Aug. 9, guest column by Steve Negron went into some details about House Resolution 5717 regarding gun rights and his reasons to inform the public. As a candidate for New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District House seat, I am sure that he is aware that this HR must pass through the Senate if it passes the House of Representatives. However, I appreciated his concern, even though I am myself own no firearms.

The last two paragraphs of his column took on a different tone, though. For one thing, i wish that he had spent some time clarifying the section where he stated, “current events involving government retraction of our liberties in the wake of COVID-19 … now make it more important to be staunch defenders of our precious First Amendment rights.” Here in New Hampshire, the only rights I have missed are those that allow me to freely come and go without having to wear a mask in public places. The safety of the population as a while must certainly have been on the minds of our Founding Fathers when they wrote the amendments.

I also detected a strong inclination toward partisanism in the last paragraph. Is it too much to ask that the people belonging to both parties try to follow the advice of an old Greek philosopher who said, “Come let us reason together.” Emphasize the word reason. As a country, I am sure that we are all tired of our Congress pouting and pointing fingers at each other like little children.
