Schools needs same testing as pros

By Joe O’Neill - Amherst | Aug 1, 2020

With all local school districts grappling with how to re-open schools safely, and bring students back into the classroom, the “elephant (not) in the room” is testing. Every school district needs to have the same testing capability and rapid turn-around of test results as the pro sports teams. The NBA and the NHL are in ‘bubbles’ but every player, staff member, etc. gets tested DAILY with results available in real time to quarantine anyone who tests positive. Major League Baseball is not in a bubble, but everyone on the team and all support staff are tested DAILY, with results quickly available – that’s why the Florida Marlins baseball team found 13 players who tested positive, and took steps to cancel games, quarantine the team, etc.

Why can’t public schools have this same level and quality of testing – everyone gets tested, results are quick, and actions can be taken to quarantine as needed. Why not? It’s all about money – pro sports teams have it, local schools don’t. It’s ridiculous! Shame on us as a country when we put sports teams above the health and public safety of our school kids!

All the more reason to remember that November 3 can’t come soon enough. Vote for candidates who will consider the public health of our school kids as important as how pro sports teams take their product.
