Reusable bags
I am very excited to learn that Gov. Chris Sununu has rescinded the ban on reusable bags. Now we are able to bring our own shopping bags again!
Here are some important reasons to be grateful for this rescinded ban:
• Science shows that viruses can actually live longer on plastic.
• Only 3 states in the country had the reusable bag ban. MA rescinded theirs on July 11, leaving only NH and IL.
• Connecticut has guidelines and protocols for using reusable bags safely -like bagging your own groceries. This keeps both the customer and the bagger safer.
• Plastic waste was a critical issue before COVID. It has dramatically increased with single use plastic throwaway bags.
• Areas where the plastic bags are manufactured – referred to as Toxic Alley for good reason – proportionality affect lower income and minority populations at a higher rate. This is racial injustice.
Consider thanking Sununu for this important decision. Contact Sununu at governorsununu@nh.gov or call 271-2121. Also https://www.nheconomy.com/reopeningtaskforceAnd go.surfrider.org/MyNHMyBag.
