Presidential inaction

By James Poplin - Jaffrey | Aug 1, 2020

We are in deep, deep trouble! Where is the Federal Government? We have a central government unwilling to use established tools for national disasters, like a pandemic. Since briefed on the virus in Nov 2019, the President has refused to implement the emergency production act to direct major businesses to manufacture the equipment and materials needed to combat the Covid-19 virus. As a result, our country with four and a half percent of the world’s population has over 25 percent of the confirmed virus cases. The U.S. death toll, in six months is nearing 150,000.

In many areas, hospitals are overwhelmed and desperately need doctors, nurses, ventilators, personal protective equipment, and testing items. Testing centers are backlogged due to limitations on testing capacity and chemicals to process test specimens. Given the seven-day waiting period for results, we have no effective contact tracing and quarantine system. So, the virus keeps spreading. We should have resolved these issues months ago.

The causes of this catastrophe are seated in inactions. The administration rid itself of the White House Pandemic Office in 2017. From the beginning, the President has downplayed the seriousness of the disease. He has repeated his forecast, that the virus will go away. He has worn a mask in public only twice. White House sources indicate the President’s main concern about the pandemic is its effect on his re-election, not the issues faced by Americans losing love ones, jobs, and businesses. Our house is on fire! Where are the firemen?

Every citizen needs to become a fireman, so together we can put out this blaze of inaction once and for all. This year we can vote absentee. Voting by mail is permitted, if you have virus concerns. Ask your town office for a ballot and vote in the primary and general.
