I am a CASA GAL

By Jane Hoover - Merrimack | Jul 25, 2020

I am a CASA GAL. I am a volunteer who advocates for children in a case of abuse or neglect, where their future depends on what is in their best interest. I am one of over 500 residents of the state of New Hampshire who have undergone extensive training ( 40 hours +) to support the wishes and desires of children whose world is crumbling around them. I am the voice of children in court, at meetings, at school, in the family and in the community. I am committed to gathering information from those directly involved in the future of these kiddos, spending time with children in my case, building trust and making recommendations in the best interest of those children.

I began this journey in 2014, unsure of what to expect during my first case, but I will say that the training and support provided me prepared me for many of the firsts I encountered. Appearing in court and being looked at as the advocate for the children was empowering and when the judge thanked me for my words, I knew I was making a difference! Since then, my experiences, while sometimes disheartening, have only validated my decision to be a CASA GAL and an advocated for children.

We are in unprecedented times here in New Hampshire. So many of us have been confined to our homes without access to the systems that four months ago helped keep us safe. Imagine a child who relied on the support of teachers, counselors, daycare providers and extended family to keep them safe, left without those supports. The number of children in need of support has grown and the need for adults to advocate for them has also.

The good news is, you can help! CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) will be holding virtual training during August and September, available throughout the state – and from the comfort of your own home. If you are looking for a way to make a difference in the lives of neglected or abused children in New Hampshire, I encourage you to visit CASANH.org for more information and training dates – as a six year veteran of this amazing organization, I assure you, you won’t regret it.
