Not Hudson’s Best Option

By Kathy Leary - Hudson | Jul 18, 2020

A previous writer stated that the proposed Hudson Logistics Center is “the best option we will ever get for our town.” Given the negative impacts a project of this magnitude will have on Hudson, I for one don’t want to settle for this project just because it happens to be the one on the table now. The writer states that previous projects proposed for this site created additional burdens on the Town, implying that the Logistics Center will not. In fact, the proposed Logistics Center would operate 24/7 and have significant impacts on traffic, noise, pollution, wetlands and water runoff to name a few.

Hillwood’s estimate of 150-250 trucks per day equals 300-500 trips per day in and out of the site. Plus, they say they could have 1000-2500 employees so that’s another 1000/2500 cars or 2000/5000 trips per day in and out. Imagine that additional traffic load on Lowell Road, other roads and at the Sagamore Bridge/Lowell Road intersection. But, those estimates are only the tip of the iceberg: the total number of truck loading docks and additional truck parking spaces can easily accommodate 1000 to 3500 trucks (or 2000/7000 trips) per day. Imagine trips to Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club! With that additional traffic, drivers are sure to head to the bridge in the north part of Hudson.

The noise of trucks (“beep beep”, braking, docking, idling) will be 24/7. Diesel trucks emit harmful fumes and particulates (known carcinogens) which will be in the air we breathe and drift into the Merrimack River, Limit Brook, wetlands and water table. The proposed access road terminates in a wetland area. Hillwood’s commitment to “preserving much of the green space” means they cram 3 huge buildings (totaling the size of 2.5 Pheasant Lane Malls) into a section of the property adjacent to the Merrimack River and residential neighborhoods. The three buildings are 2.6 million square feet or about 40-45 football fields!

The project will impact local services in terms of road maintenance (Lowell Road and others plus the proposal calls for the facility entrance to be a Town-maintained road), police (increased accidents) and fire. On June 5, 2020, an LA-area Amazon facility the size of just one of the buildings here burned to the ground despite the efforts of 6 fire departments, shutting down the adjacent Interstate 10. Could Hudson handle that? This proposed project is NOT the best option the Town can get for this site. See savehudsonnh.org for more information.
