Decision leaves women behind

By Elizabeth Boucher - Concord | Jul 18, 2020

Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling in favor of Little Sisters of the Poor in exempting contraceptive coverage by employer based health plans is a frightening blow to women nationwide no matter what their religion.

With this ruling over 120,000 women could lose contraceptive coverage from their employers, further reducing healthcare coverage during a global health crisis. Without the ability to make reproductive decisions including family planning, women in every state are now at even more risk for unintended pregnancies. Furthermore, families continue to be without the social and economic support to care for a child following delivery. Cost is a barrier to contraceptive use and access. Lack of access only furthers racial and socioeconomic health disparities. Access to contraception and investment in family planning not only prevents unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and maternal deaths it also leads to greater economic freedom and stability for women and their families. Without widespread contraceptive coverage, women are left behind.

It’s critical that we vote Trump out of office to preserve reproductive rights in the U.S. and globally. We need to re-elect Senator Jeanne Shaheen and others like her who continue to champion for the health of women and who will stand up for the health, empowerment, and rights of everyone, everywhere.
