Shurtleff writes Sununu

By Stephen J. Shurtleff - Speaker of the House | Jul 11, 2020

I write to you today with urgency about President Donald Trump’s campaign event this Saturday in Portsmouth. As has been widely reported,at the president’s previous rallies, even though masks were encouraged, most people did not wear them, and we have seen spikes of COVID-19 once the president has left town. You seemed to recognize the danger of such a visit yesterday at your press conference when you said,“I’m not going to put myself in the middle of a crowd of thousands of people, if that’s your question specifically.”

While the rest of the country continues to struggle with COVID-19, New Hampshire has remained a bright spot. All of us fear a second wave and we should all be doing everything we can not to invite one. You have often touted your work with the White House and your close relationship with President Trump and his administration. I ask you to use that relationship now to put Granite Staters first and have president’s campaign practice basic safety standards and require masks on Saturday.

Thank you for attention to this matter.
