We must fight this war

By Evan Fulmer - Merrimack | Jun 13, 2020

I have been considering words for this letter for sometime, but after the vigil on Saturday, it is time to put my thoughts for others to read. We have been hearing that the white supremacist are trying to start a race war. Well, it is too late, the race war has already started. The war between the Human Race and Trumpism, the war between sanity and uncontrolled insanity, the war to save the United States of America.

Last night’s speakers were inspiring, and pointed out rightly that will not be a quick or easy battle. We do know how to win this type of war. My generation, the boomers, won the battle of ending the Vietnam war. We helped get the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts passed. Since then, the other side has slowly chipped away our victories, and we failed to stay alert enough to fight off the subtle dilution of the victories. Hollowing them out and to some extent destroying them.

It has taken so many innocent lives to get us to the point of forcing change. We can not allow any more to be lost. There is so many horrible acts by law enforcement, the insanity that killed George Floyd, and the failure to help the 75 year old man that they had knocked and was on the ground bleeding are just 2 of hundreds of vile actions by those are hired to protect and serve. The police have a very difficult job, the danger increases when they fail to put protect at the forefront of their job. I do not want any police office hurt or killed, but shoot first can not be the way officers respond.

My dad fought in WWII and was a decorated fireman in Indianapolis, and he never once worried about the race of the people involved when fighting a fire. He knew his job was to save lives and property, and that was what he always worked to do. We can’t be colorblind, but we have never let color ever come in the way of public servants serving the public.

We must fight this war for the Human Race, for the United States, and for the World, and when we win, vigilance will be the tasks of everyone that comes after.
