No convincing needed

By Timothy C. Tiches - Nashua | Jun 13, 2020

What’s worse, blaming systemic racism because a black man was murdered or blaming systemic violence on protesters because policemen were murdered? Using the same logic, there’s no difference. Murder is violent and hateful. None should be tolerated. All perpetrators should face accountability.

Does progressive white privilege (WP) evolve from white progressive guilt?

Today, progressives blame WP, in part, for the current black community “unequal” status. Being white, automatically classifies one having WP. But descendants of white, legal, immigrants naturalized after the 13th (Abolition) and 15th (Voting Rights) Constitutional amendments didn’t restrict the freedom of any slave and haven’t benefited at the detriment of blacks. So, generalizing WP is based on a false premise and most accusations are without merit. There are many reasons for black hardships, but these white and non-black descendants of immigrants are not culpable. Note, that all these descendants now constitute a significant portion of the American population.

Today, white progressive guilt ensues from those white Southern Democrat descendants in the House of Representatives who advocated for slavery and opposed abolition then. But it would be dishonest to generalize that Democrats are guilty of their predecessors’ heavy collusion with the system of slavery. It would be inappropriate to claim Democrats are the original American purveyors of systemic racism. History exposes the past, and we shouldn’t hide it. Progressives needn’t dismantle statues and rename streets/schools/institutions to mitigate their guilt nor use guilt to convince me that peaceful protesting for equal protection is righteous, because no convincing is needed.
