Support Andru Volinsky

By Chuck Grau - Bedford | May 16, 2020

In this time of unprecedented crisis, New Hampshire needs a governor who has the courage to lead, not one who hides in secrecy behind the trappings of his office.

Last Wednesday, Gov. Chris Sununu met with the Executive Council to consider the $950 million June warrant, which included $450 million in federal COVID relief money.

A week before the meeting, Executive Councilor Andru Volinsky had requested detailed information about how these funds would be spent, but Sununu’s response was woefully inadequate. Twenty percent of the warrant funds were stashed away in completely undefined contingency funds, and $42 million was left to the sole discretion of Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut to spend.

The national media are rife with stories about how COVID relief monies meant for small businesses have instead landed in the pockets of big corporations, and I’m gravely concerned that Gov. Sununu failed to share detailed information, because he has something to hide.

I applaud the courageous, bipartisan vote to table the June warrant until May 20, the Council’s demand for complete transparency, and Councilor Volinsky’s demonstration of leadership.

Without complete transparency, there is no way to prevent relief monies from going to Sununu’s political cronies instead of those they were meant to actually help.

I look forward to voting for Andru in the Sept. 8 Democratic primary. I trust Andru to always act openly, and to welcome accountability for his actions.

Andru Volinsky exhibits the courage and leadership we need in our governor.
