A letter to Gov. Sununu

By Nancy Brennan - Weare | May 16, 2020

After hearing your updates on New Hampshire’s response to the coronavirus, I wonder how you expect anyone to pay attention to the social distancing requirements when you don’t speak out against the large gatherings at the State House.

There have been two rallies so far, putting people in close contact with each other for two-plus hours. They bring their kids and speak of their “rights,” filming themselves laughing at the signs that are posted on the State House grounds.

Why do you allow this to happen? I understand a confrontation could get ugly, what with the white supremacy symbols and weapons some of them carry, and I’m not sure what the solution is. But certainly it’s part of your job to find one. Why haven’t you at the very least spoken up against the rallies?

If they can meet in large close-packed groups, how are you going to justify keeping people from congregating in large groups on beaches and hiking trails? Why should the owners of stores and restaurants listen to you? Are the orders merely suggestions, not requirements? Or does your silence have something to do with how you’re hoping these folks will vote in the fall?

There is another gathering planned for today, this time in the name of freedom of religion. I urge you to speak up. We’re looking to you for leadership. The blatant disregard for the good of the community by this selfish group will put many more people at risk.
