Volunteer mothers make difference

By Patricia K. Mellor - CEO – Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, Gold Award Girl Scout, Bedford | May 9, 2020

This Mother’s Day, Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains would like to thank all the moms (and mom substitutes) who step up to volunteer for our organization across New Hampshire and Vermont.

Girl Scouts is a volunteer-driven organization. We rely on the dedication and selflessness of our more than 3,000 volunteers to help us mentor girls from kindergarten through high school to become young women of courage, confidence and character. But it’s not just the girls who benefit – so do the thousands of moms who find fulfillment in being the role models and leaders for Girl Scouts.

Dawn Zipps of Swanzey, New Hampshire, became a Girl Scout leader when her daughter was a first-year Daisy. A few years later, she became the primary leader of the troop, even when her daughter moved to a new troop for older girls. “Now, I couldn’t imagine not being a leader,” she posted on Facebook. “The girls are amazing, and I love them as if they were my own. They have changed me forever.”

Being in Girl Scouts is often passed on from mother to daughter, as in the case of Margo Houde of Manchester. “I’ve been a Girl Scout since I was 6. My mom was my troop leader and has always been active in Girl Scouts and does outdoor living trainings, etc.,” she posted on Facebook. “She is my inspiration and the reason I decided that when my daughter was old enough, I would be her troop leader. We are three generations of Girl Scouts! I love these girls and want them to have a forever troop like I did that moved up through the ranks together.”

Girl Scout troop leaders provide all their girls with guidance, challenges and a safe space to discover all that they can be. We encourage anyone thinking of volunteering should contact us at 888-474-9686 or see www.girlscoutsgwm.org.

Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains appreciates each and every one of our volunteers, and wishes all a very happy Mother’s Day.
