Carbon fee: A long-term stimulus

By Megan Pardoe - Nashua | Apr 27, 2020

The outbreak of COVID-19 has left many people in hard places, without jobs or enough income to support them. The federal government issued a stimulus for qualified Americans to help them during these times. But once this outbreak settles, we need a long-term plan to fight climate change.

Climate change is the No. 1 issue facing the U.S. today, and placing a carbon fee will help both the environment and the economy. The Energy Innovation & Carbon Dividend Act, which was brought up in the house, proposes a fee to be placed on carbon. With this plan a fee starting at $15 per metric tonne of carbon and rising by $10 each year would be placed on carbon at the source. Once this money is collected, it will be returned equally among households.

Not only will this benefit the environment by allowing for less carbon pollution, but it also will aid the economy. This long-term stimulus will help the change to clean energy. But it also will allow for more spending and money returned to the economy. This act is supported by both Democrats and Republicans.
