Taking a stand

By Ian Wade - Nashua | Feb 23, 2020

Before recently, I was unaware of all the many ways in which humans belittle and treat animals like they are nothing but objects that we own.

I have learned that currently in New Hampshire, the law allows anyone to kill wild animals that are causing “actual and substantial” damage to property.

This law is in place mainly for farmers and establishing a baseline so that wildlife isn’t killed for merely walking through a backyard. However, there is currently a bill trying to lower the bar for killing wild animals.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department were against the bill, stating, “It’s an important threshold to ensure that our citizens don’t shoot a moose for walking across a newly planted lawn, don’t shoot a deer for browsing on a single shrub that happens to be in someone’s back yard, don’t shoot a bear because it knocked over a barbecue.”

Hunters and farmers are looking for an easy way to make their unlawful killings justified. I believe that the unjust killing of animals should be taken more seriously and not have even less regulation.

No animal should be killed merely for eating a farmer’s apples. I think about it as, would you like your child to be shot or killed for simply playing in the wrong yard?
