We are in this together

By Shenandoah Ableman - Kingston | Feb 3, 2020

As goes Australia, so goes New Hampshire?

As I sit here in New Hampshire, with almost no snow on the ground in January, all I can think of is what will future generations experience in this world.

Australia is on fire now, California is still reeling from ever-expanding fire seasons, our oceans are heating up and here in New Hampshire we seem to think that the problem is somewhere else, that’s it not affecting us.

But it is.

A rapidly warming climate that upends our seasons not only impacts wildlife for hunting and fishing, but our outdoors and tourism industry, and our farms and maple syrup production.

That’s why it’s crucial for the next president to take swift action in their first 100 days to end U.S. fossil fuel production, consumption and exports, while at the same time holding fossil fuel polluters accountable and ensuring everyone benefits from a clean energy future.

We know that there is a lot of anxiety about weaning ourselves off fossil fuels and moving to sustainable energy sources. A transition does not mean turning off the taps overnight. Rather, it means taking climate limits seriously and intentionally planning to wind-down fossil fuel extraction at the pace required to meet them – which will ensure that those who would be most impacted by a shift in the economy won’t be left behind.

The daily scientific proof and evidence is overwhelming and clear – we have no more time to waste. It is time to stop adding fuel to the fire that is literally burning our planet, and to keep fossil fuels in the ground.

Are we in this together? We are in this together.
