A uniquely American solution

By Tess George - Nashua | Feb 2, 2020

A while back, I got a small piece of glass stuck in my foot and went to the doctor’s to have it removed. Several visits later, it was finally out. This small piece of bad luck cost me $800. That was my co-pay – my co-pay.

Poll after poll shows that most Americans think our current health-care system doesn’t work. We like our doctors, but not the system. Deductibles and co-pays go up and up, and many of us stay in jobs we don’t like, or are terrified of losing our jobs, only for the health insurance. American healthcare now ranks 26th in the world. This system is too broken to be improved; it’s got to be replaced.

Medicare for All is a uniquely American solution to this problem. It’s not the European or Canadian system. It’s based on an American system already in place – Medicare – which is popular among people who have it. Under Medicare for All, health-care providers still work for themselves, not the government, and bill Medicare. Employers would be able to pass the money saved to their employees, and we would end up with a cheaper, more efficient system.

Sounds like a winner to me.
