Put the country first

By Harold Solomon - Nashua | Aug 4, 2019

Time has come for all good men and women to come to the aid of their country.

Robert S. Mueller has and all Americans who believe in the Constitution of this great country need to as well.

I have been listening to an audible version of the Mueller Report. Mueller’s testimony last week was another call to duty for him. His reluctance was understandable. Having testified on some 90 occasions, I’m sure it wasn’t stage fright. The politicians and the “talking heads” of the 24/7 news cycle have transformed politics into a realty TV program known as the Trump Show. It’s understandable why he was reluctant. He was there to answer any questions on his report. He wasn’t looking for ratings.

For me, Bob Mueller did a fantastic job. He provided a visible dimension to the alleged high crimes and misdemeanors in the report, namely, obstruction of justice and complicity with foreign involvement in our elections.

It’s an imperative that anti-cyberwarfare measures be immediately put in place to combat the hacking and social media hijacking by the Russians. A Senate bi-partisan report, defining the severity of the problem, has just been released, and Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, has blocked two bills that would deal with the problem.

I believe the oath that many of us took to defend the country and Constitution from enemies, both domestic and foreign, is being ignored by too many in government. I believe, in some cases, it has been traded in for money and power.

If we are to uphold the Constitution, we need to initiate a proper response to the charges contained in the Mueller Report. There is no other choice than to immediately initiate an impeachment inquiry to determine if “high crimes and misdemeanors” have been committed by the president and others.

“High crimes and misdemeanors” are defined in the Constitution as “treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” Further, the notion that only criminal conduct can meet the standard for impeachment does not historically agree with either the views of the founders or with previous practice.

The president’s crimes, alleged in the Mueller’s report, certainly not only meet the threshold in the Constitution, but near the top in criminality

Now is the time to allow those people who have been subpoenaed to respond. If the charges in the Moeller Report are false and “made up,” Trump will be exonerated.

Congressional Republicans and Democrats are derelict in their duty under our Constitutional if they deny an inquiry. Both of them need to put their country first, not their re-election bid or other partisan personal interests.

Bob Mueller, a Republican, understands putting his country first. I hope his response to another call to duty touches others as it has me.
