The speech she would like to deliver

By Staff | Jun 7, 2016

Admiral W.H. McRaven gave an inspiring speech to University of Texas graduates in 2014. His advice was to make your bed every day. I love it. I’ve told my teenage kids to start making their bed.

I then started thinking, what would my speech be like? I know full well a boring, middle-aged mother of two would never get invited, but if by some miracle I ever get asked, it would go something like this:

Never be a burden and always a blessing. This advice holds true for every facet of life.

Family: help out at home, learn your way around the kitchen, respect your parents and siblings, don’t get in trouble, and stop the drama.

Friends: check on them, be supportive, keep good ones your whole life, don’t create friction, and don’t use them.

At school: do your work, let the teachers do their jobs, and pass your classes.

Work: don’t complain and drag everyone down. Get to work on time and do your best.

Health: Don’t abuse drugs and don’t smoke. Don’t be a burden on our health system. Take care of your body.

In relationships: If you want children, get married first. You deserve that respect. Don’t expect someone else to take care of your kids.

Society: Pay your bills and taxes. Don’t ask government to give you a handout. You’re entitled to nothing. Save it for those who truly need it and cannot help themselves. Welcome to the real world."
