Privatization has led to sleepless nights

By Staff | Nov 1, 2015

I have been Head Custodian at Amherst Street Elementary School for the past 28 years. Straight up, I love my job. It’s something I look forward to every day for a few reasons:

Seeing the kids and watching them grow to become the individuals that they are.

Working with the truly dedicated staff of past and present, an amazing group of people.

Knowing that this building is a clean and safe environment for all involved.

I take great pride in this building and I know that the other custodians share the same sentiment. It’s not an easy job by any means, from ceilings to floors, walls to windows, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, it’s a constant upkeep. Taking care of the grounds in the winter is a job in itself.

The thought of the 101 of us losing our jobs to privatization has led to a lot of sleepless nights for me. It’s funny, when we have a fire drill the kids will ask, "Mr. O’Brien, how come you don’t come outside?" I tell them, the captain always goes down with the ship. It is with great hope that I get to see this ship sail for a long time to come.

If this privatization does go through, I will be saddened and worried about the fate of "my" building and all who roam the halls. In no way will the quality or quantity of work compare, nor the dedication and devotion put forth by us everyday. I would like to thank everyone out there who supports us. Never forget that we are on your side, too.
