He supports Lasky and Gilmour

By Staff | Nov 2, 2014

On Oct. 16, I attended a candidates’ forum sponsored by BAE Systems and the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce. I was especially interested in hearing the state level candidate’s position on NH infrastructure and its link to the NH economy. As a decade’s long businessman and an active member of the Nashua community, I know that to have a vibrant economy, we need to have a solid infrastructure and a balanced transportation system.

Of concern to me are the two candidates, Doris Hohenesee and Kevin Avard, who are challenging our current Nashua-area Senators, Lasky and Gilmour. Both challengers appeared to be ill-informed, unprepared and oblivious to the importance of a solid infrastructure, including passenger rail, and how it relates to Nashua’s economic future. When pushed by moderator Chris Williams, CEO of the chamber, Mr. Avard said that he wouldn’t commit to supporting the rail initiative but would probably oppose it.

That attitude spilled over into Mr. Avard’s discussion on the 4.2 cent gas tax, an increase that was supported by the business community. He called it a “slush fund” for the state budget. In reality, the legislation was tightly crafted so the gas tax increase would only fund infrastructure improvements to roads and bridges.

I suggest Mr. Avard and Ms. Hohensee educate themselves on the issues that are important to Nashua and the region if they are to be taken as serious contenders. Sens. Lasky and Gilmour understand the importance of a strong infrastructure, its impact on economic growth and have served Nashua well. Now is not the time to change our representation in Concord.
