Why he’s sticking with Shaheen

By Staff | Oct 29, 2014

“I vote for the person, not the party.” Sound familiar? But, what to do if both persons are decent and intelligent, as are Scott Brown and Jeanne Shaheen? That’s when the party becomes very important.

I will stay with Shaheen, a proven public servant.

If Brown is elected, what will he do?

First, he will vote to continue as his Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, whose stated purpose for the last six years has been to make Obama a failed president. No bipartisanship from Mitch.

Second, he will try to repeal Obamacare, the culmination of more than a half century of progressive attempts to make America’s excellent medical system available to all. No longer will thousands lose their homes due to medical bankruptcy, or lose their insurance because of lost jobs, etc.

“But, oh, the cost” weeps the GOP (a la the walrus and the carpenter). No matter that all those with white hair applauding Brown have taxpayer-subsidized Social Security and Medicare. No matter that the great majority of Brown’s supporters had company-provided medical insurance, again subsidized by the taxpayers via the back door of “tax expenditures.”

There are other important weaknesses in the GOP (e.g., its fallacious “family around the kitchen table” economic model), but Brown’s promise to repeal Obamacare sticks in one’s craw because he will deny to millions of Americans a benefit his supporters have had for decades.
