Democrats were willing to debate

By Staff | Oct 20, 2014

I am disappointed to read Doris Hohensee’s recent statement that state Sen. Bette Lasky is unwilling to hold a public debate during this campaign. As chair of the Nashua Democratic City Committee, I reached out to my counterpart with the Nashua Republican City Committee in late September to express an interest from the Democratic candidates for state Senate and Executive Council to engage in a public forum with their Republican opponents. I never received a response from the RNCC about this offer.

Nevertheless, because I knew Mrs. Hohensee was also interested in holding a debate, I reached out to her directly through email. Included on the communications were, again, the chair of the NRCC and the events coordinator for their organization. Mrs. Hohensee was the only person to respond to me. She suggested that I work with the RNCC to coordinate such an event, but I never heard from anyone within their organization.

We’ve seen other Republicans across the state try to use this line of attack throughout the campaign. Here in Nashua, though, this charge is patently untrue. Sen. Lasky, Sen. Peggy Gilmour and Executive Council candidate Diane Sheehan are very much willing to engage their opponents in a public event. The lack of response from city Republicans, however, left us to believe that they were the ones not interested in such an event.
