This new Gilded Age threatens our country

This new Gilded Age is a threat to country

Regarding the three Market Basket board members urging an end to the standoff: We are a group that meets regularly on Wednesdays at the Church of Our Saviour in Milford to discuss the gospel for the upcoming Sunday. Recently we have been considering the “Feeding of the 5000” and several of Jesus’ parables. We see in Jesus’ teaching a call for fairness and equity, a call for justice. We also see in the struggle at Market Basket a brave group of employees who are calling for the same. “Save our culture” is their cry, a culture that treats employees with dignity and fairness and is as interested in the employees and customers as it is profits.

We have come to refer to this as “The Parable of the Employees,” and we wish to honor them and support them, for in them we see the struggle of many whose wages are shrinking while the top 1 percent in our country grow more wealthy. This is really neither fair nor just. This new Gilded Age will not be good for our country or future generations.

We stand behind the brave employees of Market Basket who have risked all for what they believe. Perhaps if more of us had such courage, our economy could be restored to a fair balance between those who labor and those who profit from that labor.
