Liberty duplicity hurts Hollis

By Staff | Aug 5, 2014

Liberty Utilities is fairly new to New Hampshire and wants to expand its business in the state, primarily the Concord area. To do that, Liberty has joined forces with Kinder Morgan, a pipeline building company, to run a pipeline diagonally through the town of Hollis. Up to this point, Liberty has been unwilling or unable to definitively locate its terminus in Merrimack that would be served by this pipeline, and company officials have refused to meet with Hollis selectmen to justify this planned route, hiding behind Kinder Morgan’s skirts. In an interview with The Telegraph, Liberty President Richard Leehr stated that Liberty “prefers” a pipeline on the western side of the system, but “the specifics of the route aren’t up to us.” Mr. Leehr’s statement appears to try to absolve Liberty’s complicity in ripping Hollis apart. However, it is their terminus and presumably they chose its location. They already have a “Plan B” which worked well last year during peak season and can be activated again, without the additional gas from the pipeline and terminus.

What kind of business operates like this, on one hand denying responsibility for a destructive pipeline project, on the other being the instigator behind the project? Homes, conservation lands, town lands, water, a town’s tax base, character and beauty can be destroyed.

Liberty should pull the plug on this project.
