Most support food labeling of GMO products

By Staff | Dec 17, 2013

A recent scientific poll of 500 New Hampshire voters conducted by the Mellman Group that included members from all political parties found that 90 percent support genetically-modified organism food labeling.

Some argue that it would cost too much to change labels. This argument is lame, since food corporations routinely change their labels for marketing reasons. In other countries where GMO labeling has been implemented, the prices that consumers pay for food have not been affected.

The idea that labeling should occur at the federal level is ludicrous. What’s really happening now is that the corporations and associations that oppose labeling are pressing Congress to pass laws that would preempt the ability of states to enact their own labeling laws for GE foods, thus making it illegal.

An amended version of the recently introduced HB660 bill in New Hampshire that proposed labeling is on it’s way, the wording of which will closely resemble legislation recently passed in Maine and Connecticut. This bill is also in line with the world standard for GMO labeling that already exists in 64 countries, including China and the entire Europe Union. Let’s hope that, in New Hampshire, our political representatives will side with the health, concern and voice of the people.
