Clean air settlement bodes well for state
Unhealthy air that makes its way into our state from dirty coal-fired power plants in the Midwest is a major reason states like New Hampshire continue to struggle with air pollution that threatens peoples’ lives and health.
That’s why the American Lung Association applauds the most recent settlement New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney reached with attorneys general of seven other states, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and American Electric Power.
This settlement will accelerate the speed at which AEP, one of the nation’s largest electricity producers, will reduce dangerous sulfur dioxide emissions from several of its Midwest plants.
The settlement also specifies that New Hampshire and the other states will share in $6 million from AEP that will be dedicated to reducing pollution and increasing energy efficiency. The result will be cleaner, healthier air.
It is only through the cooperation of industry in adhering to the Clean Air Act, upgrading pollution control equipment and embracing clean, renewable energy sources whenever possible that we will succeed in making the greatest lung health improvements and saving the most lives.
