Northern Pass no business of chamber

By Staff | Dec 7, 2012

I was appalled and dismayed about The Telegraph’s Dec. 4 article, “Nashua Chamber behind Northern Pass” – not only for its content, but also for the audacity of the members of the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce to make a public statement regarding such a critical and divisive issue.

It is most improper for the chamber to formally pass judgment on a project such as this, which carries profound concerns primarily for the northern two-thirds of the state and has little impact and virtually no benefit to Greater Nashua.

It is not within the purview of the chamber to decide what is best for the state of New Hampshire or for New England, as chamber President and CEO Chris Williams so boldly proclaimed about the Northern Pass project.

The article is full of half-truths and one-sided views about the potential value of hydropower being “relatively inexpensive” and “environmentally friendly,” neither of which is true.

The fact is that New Hampshire gets no additional power from this project, since we are merely the conduit for bringing more energy down to southern New England.

The fact is that because of improved energy efficiency and energy conservation, and the abundance of natural gas, we, as a nation, are becoming energy independent, making imports from other countries completely unnecessary in the near future.

The article ends by stating “the chamber will actively engage in legislative and other activities” to promote the project.

Wow! Makes you wonder who is really benefitting from this decision.
