Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | Apr 24, 2021

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

THUMBS UP – To Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, who has started a post COVID-19 program for people feeling shortness of breath, fatigue and body aches, rapid heartbeat, memory issues and other symptoms more than three months after they became infected. The center said in a news release that the program for so-called “long-haulers” is the first in northern New England and will provide access to a 10-member medical team led by an infectious disease specialist. “We probably are only at the beginning of the impact of this virus,” Dr. Michael Calderwood, chief quality officer, said Wednesday. “We continue to learn about this virus and about post-COVID-19 symptoms, and these types of care centers are going to be really important as we think about our comprehensive and coordinated approach to COVID-19 aftercare.” This program should provide much-needed data on the virus and its long-term impact. Let’s hope advancements continue to be made as more is learned about the coronavirus.

THUMBS UP – On the progress being made in the investigation into sexual abuse allegations at the Youth Development Center in Manchester, now called the Sununu Youth Services Center. Seven former workers at the Manchester facility were arrested earlier this month and charged with either sexually assaulting or acting as accomplices to the assault of 12 teenagers from 1994 to 2005. A total of 11 arrests have been made in the wide-reaching investigation. It is key that those responsible be brought to justice so events like this can never happen again.

THUMBS DOWN – To Mother Nature for last week’s snow and continuing cold weather. That said, temperatures in Greater Nashua are suppose to hit the upper 60s this weekend, with upper 70s in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. Let’s hope spring is finally here.
