Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | Nov 7, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

THUMBS UP – To the many poll workers and election officials throughout the Granite State who made last week’s general election run so smoothly. While there still is turmoil and doubt in some states, New Hampshire once again shined, even with the sometimes-long lines that were seen throughout our state. We sincerely thank all election workers and state officials for their hard work and dedication during this historic time.

THUMBS DOWN – To Gov. Chris Sununu for not considering further restrictions or safety measures in response to the rising number of coronavirus cases. While we certainly applaud his actions thus far on the COVID front, the surge in cases certainly is concerning. Sununu, a Republican, said his approach is to study the data and make more targeted adjustments by region or industry. “The fact that our contact tracing is so specific allows us to be very surgical, very precise about where we can tighten things up,” Sununu said. Let us hope cases do not continue to increase. More vigilance must be taken, especially now to avoid another shutdown before the holidays. This, of course, could be an absolute disaster.

THUMBS UP – And congratulations to the winners of last week’s election. Now, it’s time to get down to business, move away from the divisiveness that has not only split our nation in two, but oftentimes our own communities. We have seen it time and again over the past couple years. Elected officials – no matter party affiliation – should remember that they work for the people.
