Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | Sep 26, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

Thumbs UP – To Gov. Chris Sununu for calling our President Donald Trump for making “a very inappropriate comment” when he declined to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the Nov. 3 election. “Obviously there’s a winner of an election and a loser of an election. With a current incumbent, whether you’re the president or on the planning board, there has to be a smooth transition of power,” Sununu said. “I think everybody should understand that that’s the expectation up and down the ballot.” Trump was asked at a news conference Wednesday whether he was committed to a peaceful transfer of power. “We’re going to have to see what happens,” he said. “You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster.” Good for Sununu for standing up for what’s right!

THUMBS DOWN – To those who are pilfering and defacing election signs throughout Greater Nashua and New Hampshire. Several incidents have been reported recently, and the old adage of if it’s not yours, keep your hands off comes to mind. We hope law enforcement officials take this seriously, and we also hope homeowners turn over any security camera footage that may help catch the culprits. In addition, those who are convicted of theft, vandalism, etc. of political signs risk losing their own right to vote, according to the New Hampshire Constitution. While we certainly hope it doesn’t go that far, we do hope people stop these needless shenanigans. Candidates have the right to put their election signs out in approved public places, and homeowners have the right to display those same materials how they see fit. Stealing and defacing these signs is childish and, in essence, undermines our democratic process.
