Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | Sep 19, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

THUMBS DOWN – To the culprit in an incident during remote learning last week in Nashua. A teacher in Nashua reported a pornographic image being shown to the entire class during a remote lesson, Gregory Rodriguez, Nashua’s director of technology told WMUR-TV. The teacher closed down the class right away, he said. “We’re working with the Nashua Police Department, trying to figure out ways to investigate this,” Rodriguez said. In Concord, there have been several reports of inappropriate behavior during remote high school lessons. Two were pornographic, one was racial, and one involved a toy gun in the background behind a student, said Pam McLeod, the district’s IT director. The Concord police computer crimes unit is investigating. While we certainly understand remote learning is less formal than in-person learning, incidents like these must stop. We hope school and law enforcement officials get to the bottom of this, and that the focus remains on learning, not horsing around.

THUMBS UP – To officials and community members for their help and care in finding Spartacus, a 40-pound African serval cat. The cat was “was trapped near its home and is in good health,” Merrimack police said late last week. The animal has been returned to its owner, Dean King, who said that Spartacus had run away after getting spooked by the family dog. King adopted Spartacus from a Florida zoo four years ago.

THUMBS UP – To Gov. Chris Sununu and other state officials on helping New Hampshire’s unemployment rate fall again for August, down to 6.5%. The 1.5% decrease is good news; however, officials must keep up the good work for this to continue.
