Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | Aug 29, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

Thumbs Up – To New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu for fighting Massachusetts officials who are trying to tax Granite State residents who are working from home during the pandemic. Sununu has said Massachusetts is effectively “picking the pockets” of New Hampshire residents and subjecting them to an income tax even though they are working outside of that state. The governor said he will continue to fight the Bay State’s efforts every day.

Thumbs DOWN – To the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions at nursing homes in three New Hampshire counties. Belknap, Coos and Grafton counties can now increase the number of visitors indoors to two per resident, spurred by low numbers for just over two weeks. Some rules also have been loosened regarding communal dining and other activities. While we are all for people being able to visit their loved ones, we also think officials should remain more cautious for a bit longer. After all, those who live in nursing homes are an irreplaceable and valuable treasure. In addition, amusement parks in New Hampshire are increasing their attendance capacity from 25% to 35%. Still, we say, too soon. A slower approach should be taken to avoid potential setbacks.

THUMBS UP – To Vermin Supreme, the oft presidential in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary. Supreme now is running as a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate in neighboring Massachusetts. A Libertarian, he will face off with U.S. Sen. Edward Markey and U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III. While he even admits his candidacy is a “lark,” good for him for exercising his right to run for office.
