Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | Jun 27, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

THUMBS UP AND CONGRATULATIONS to Souhegan High School seniors on their recent graduation. Last week, students received their diplomas in a ceremony, which was followed by a parade.

THUMBS UP AND CONGRATULATIONS high school graduates all over Greater Nashua, Greater Hudson and the Souhegan Valley. Unfortunately, traditional ceremonies were canceled this year, being replaced by smaller events with social distancing or virtual events. This milestone certainly deserves celebrating for students, parents and teachers; however, our hope at The Sunday Telegraph is that school will be able to resume as usual later this summer so another class doesn’t have to forego such a special time.

THUMBS DOWN to all local residents who have decided to start July 4 celebrations early by setting off fireworks – some very late in the evening or the early hours of the morning. While we are all for honoring this great nation on the Fourth of July, we also are for peace and quiet in neighborhoods, especially during the week. We also support those who suffer from PTSD or other issues that impact them when fireworks are set off. Also, please remember and be cautious of pets when taking part in this activity. Finally, for those who do set off fireworks, please be cautious, not only yourself, but your entire family. For the record, personal fireworks are illegal in Nashua.

THUMBS UP to Gov. Chris Sununu for creating a commission on law enforcement. Sununu signed an order earlier this month creating the commission on law enforcement accountability, community and transparency in response to what he called the “tragic murder” May 25 of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The commission is expected to review police training and policies, procedures related to the reporting, investigation and punishment of police misconduct, and the state of relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The commission will produce a report within 45 days with its recommendations.
