Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | Jun 20, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

THUMBS UP to the River Casino and several other local businesses that reopened last week to customers. Many eateries also have opened their dining rooms at 50 percent capacity, something that should spur the local economy. At The River, charitable gaming has now resumed, with the addition of a new game, New Hampshire 21. The popular Nashua casino – as well as all local businesses – have taken many precautions to ensure customers are safe. The River and these other establishments have set an example for others in the Granite State on how to welcome patrons back the right way. It certainly is nice to see Greater Nashua and the Souhegan Valley getting back to normal.

THUMBS UP to the United Way of Greater Nashua for teaming up with the Greater Nashua Food Council to donate commercial freezers to four local pantries in Nashua. With an increasing demand for services, the Salvation Army, Tolles Street Mission, Corpus Christie Food Pantry and St. Joseph Hospital Food Pantry have all found themselves in need of freezer capacity to support local food needs. In response to this need, the Food Council and United Way have purchased each of them a new commercial-grade freezer, which will be installed by United Way COVID Response Team volunteers. For more information about the Greater Nashua Food Council go to https://greaternashuafoodcouncil.org/. For more about United Way, go to www.UnitedWayNashua.org.

THUMBS DOWN to the woman in Hampton, New Hampshire, who was accused last week of leaving 17 dogs without food and water. A total of 20 dogs and a bird were taken into custody by Hampton police on May 13. They were examined and treated by the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Last week, police charged Susan Bahatouris, 63, of Hampton, with 17 counts of animal cruelty. This certainly is a sad situation, and hopefully the court system will levy a harsh sentence if the charges are proven to be true.
