Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | May 30, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

Thumbs Up – To the city of Nashua for allowing adjustments on Main Street so local eateries could offer expanded outdoor dining. Judging by the influx of residents in the city’s downtown patronizing local eateries, the measure has been a resounding success. All business owners offering outdoor services have done so with thoughts toward safety, and in accordance with city ordinances. This move certainly will help downtown restaurants with their bottom line and help to jump-start the local economy.

Thumbs DOWN – To Gov. Chris Sununu for not issuing a mandatory face mask order. Cities and towns – including Nashua – have enacted such measures; however, the governor has remained silent on the issue. Moreover, Maine, Massachusetts and New York governors have ordered face coverings. This has the potential to save lives, and it is past time for action.

THUMBS UP – To area teachers and school systems as they approach the end of what has been a very difficult school year. Our area educators have done amazing work – as have parents – in ensuring children, both young and old, continue their academic journeys. The situation – obviously – has been difficult all around, but perseverance has paid off in what is sure to be a successful conclusion to the school year. Let us hope administrators and state officials have learned from this process, and implement any necessary changes if remote learning is required when classes resume in August.

THUMBS UP – To those who kept Memorial Day in their hearts and minds last week. Most activities and observances were canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic; however, local residents and veterans organizations continued to carry the torch for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. From virtual events to random acts of remembrance, it was nice to see locals band together in these tough times.
