Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

By Staff | May 23, 2020

Editor’s note: During the course of a week, issues are covered that might not lend themselves to full editorial comment, but they are worthy of The Sunday Telegraph weighing in – thumbs up, thumbs down or neutral.

Thumbs Up – To the city of Nashua’s Department of Public Works for its efforts in beautifying downtown by planting flowers, mulching and cleaning up beds for the season. One of the many charming things about this city is its beauty, especially in the spring and summer months. Crews worked for several days putting out these plants and spiffing up the city for visitors and residents alike.

Thumbs DOWN – To the people who continue to get upset with restaurant and store workers for enforcing COVID-19 restrictions and precautions. Patrons continue to beret these workers for either asking them to wear masks while in local establishments or asking they abide by social distancing rules. These precautions are in place for a reason, and for everyone’s safety. Please, we again plead, calm down and treat others like you would like to be treated. The situation is bad enough without tempers flaring and hurting people who only are trying to help.

THUMBS UP – To all those who will honor military personnel this Memorial Day. It is important that we all remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Today, The Sunday Telegraph features a Memorial Day page, C8. We also highlight others, including the Wheeler and Teas family – Page B6 – who have a family tradition of placing flags on all Civil War veteran graves in Milford. This undertaking not only honors the men who helped our country, but also our nation’s history. From The Sunday Telegraph, thank you and all the others who help honor those who served.

THUMBS DOWN – To the U.S. Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service who both have dropped the ball on issuing stimulus check to those in New Hampshire. Many have yet to receive these funds, which are drastically needed by our fellow neighbors. Our Congressional Delegation has swung into action, issuing a letter to the two agencies urging immediate action. We hope this letter does not fall on deaf ears, and that payments – or adjustments/corrections – be issued as quickly as possible. We also urge Congress to continue its work on a second stimulus package. While some New Hampshire businesses are beginning to open, much assistance still is needed.
