Local efforts elicit smiles

By Staff | May 2, 2020

The ability to make someone smile is among the greatest of talents, we believe. Often, it costs nothing.

However, this weekend, there are some inexpensive ways in which those who are capable can a profound impact in the lives of others.

In support of 12 different local food pantries and animal shelters, United Way of Greater Nashua is teaming up with 21 different local grocery stores for a food drive. See today’s Page B8 for a complete list of collection sites and item needs.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon today – this Saturday. During this time, shoppers at these stores may purchase an item or two from a list, which will be provided at the store, for donation. All items collected, which are non-perishable, will be used to stock local pantry shelves throughout the 11 Southern New Hampshire communities of Greater Nashua.

Neighbors helping neighbors is how our region has gotten through many tough times. We see so many who are rising to the occasion to assist each other where an how they can during the pandemic.

Along those same lines, the United Way of Greater Nashua is offering another opportunity to make a difference. Every year the United Way raises funds to donate a dozen roses for Mother’s Day to each of the moms in local shelter programs.

This year, perhaps more than others, the gesture will be even more meaningful as many of these moms are on lockdown due to COVID-19.

Roses will be distributed to: Bridges: Domestic & Sexual Violence Support of Greater Nashua & Milford, NH, Marguerite’s Place, Inc., The Front Door Agency, Keystone Hall, Mary’s House, Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter Inc., and Family Promise of Southern New Hampshire.

Any funds greater than costs for this initiative will support the United Way’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. Donations may be made at: https://www.facebook.com/donate/2531557017097208/

We hope anyone who is able to do so will assist with these efforts, resulting in smiles for the givers and the receivers – a win-win for all.
