Help local businesses; shop, eat local
A couple times a year, patronizing and purchasing items from local businesses is celebrated and encouraged, usually during the holiday season and on Black Friday – Plaid Friday in our case.
Shopping, buying and eating locally, though, has never been more important than it is now.
As concerns over the coronavirus increase and local and state governments put restrictions in place, shop and restaurant owners need us more now than ever.
In the week since COVID-19 precautions have been in place, local eateries have faced tough decisions. Some have closed – for now – and others persevere, staying open and serving their patrons via drive-through, pick-up and delivery services.
Still, business is down. With social distancing encouraged, many in Greater Nashua and the Souhegan Valley have opted to stay home and prepare meals. This, of course, is commendable – and smart, in light of the situation. However, that means less traffic at local restaurants, which in turn, has caused temporary layoffs.
Oftentimes, people don’t really think about how often they eat out and how much money they spend doing so. It’s become a reflex, especially with today’s always-busy and on-the-go lifestyles.
That’s equally true when it comes to the many mom and pop shops throughout our region. They have been hit equally hard in these now tough – but temporary – times.
What we all must remember is that when we shop or eat locally, it helps support our neighbors – our friends. Whether its buying milk and bread at the corner store or making other purchases at downtown shops or restaurants, every dollar spent right now counts and could have a big impact on the future of that establishment.
Let’s all make a concerted effort this week to buy and eat locally – at least once. We must support the people who support us in this time of great need. We can – and we WILL – get through this together.
