Public has a right to know
More than a year after Nashua resident David Smith was found murdered inside his Buck Street home, authorities have yet to release any significant information about the case.
We find this troubling.
Smith, 49, was found deceased inside his apartment at 19 Buck St. by officers responding to a 911 call early the morning of July 8, 2018.
This week, New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General Benjamin Agati told our reporter officials are “making progress.” He said investigators have “put in a lot of man-hours on this.”
An autopsy conducted by New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner Jennie V. Duval last year determined Smith was murdered by a single gunshot wound.
Several detectives worked at the scene from early July 8, 2018 through much of the day, collecting evidence and speaking with neighbors along the short, one-way street that connects Ash and Palm streets in the city’s Tree Streets neighborhood.
We certainly understand that a murder investigation can be sensitive. Interviewing witnesses, family members, friends, and others who may have information about the case is only one aspect of an investigation. Officials must also collect and evaluate evidence.
Authorities must also withhold some information to make sure not to jeopardize efforts to prosecute a criminal.
Still, after more than a year, it seems like more information should be available. We hope officials will be soon be more forthcoming.
