Student shows spunk

By Staff | Dec 13, 2018

For several months, the conduct of some Nashua Board of Education members during meetings has left us with a sense of bewilderment.

From reports of one member throwing a “temper tantrum” by getting down on all fours and yelling during a meeting, to other members accusing their colleagues of “censoring” them, the conduct leaves us somewhat befuddled.

We are heartened to know we are not alone in finding some board members out of order. Nashua High School senior Hailey Sweeney, who has served as her school’s student representative on the board, perhaps conducted herself as more of an adult in the room than the elected members did during the Monday meeting.

Amid the bickering by elected officials during the Monday session, Sweeney took it upon herself to express disappointment.

“I would like to remind the board that they are elected by their constituents,” Sweeney said. “It’s time for the board to change. I hope to see a different side of the board next year.”

Good for you, Hailey.

At any level of electoral politics – from a presidential race to a school board contest – there are always going to be self-serving individuals involved.

Still, we remain mystified as to what the problems are with these Nashua Board of Education members. Do they simply not like each other? Are they just looking to promote their own agendas and/or political ambitions? Do they have significant conflicts in the way they wish to operate a school district?

Whatever the case, we implore board members to acknowledge the only reason their positions exist: to ensure students of the Nashua School District receive the best possible education. Those with other agendas should find something else to occupy their time.
