Attend arts center meeting

By Staff | Sep 23, 2018

Along with members of the public, we hope to soon learn more about Nashua’s planned downtown performing arts center.

A special session of the Board of Aldermen is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with its stated purpose being for a presentation regarding the status of the performing arts center. We encourage interested members of the public to attend the session, which is set for City Hall, 229 Main St.

Early this year, city leaders approved the proposed $15.5 million downtown performing arts center for the former Alec’s Shoes building at the corner of West Pearl and Main streets.

The plan, however, requires Nashua leaders to raise $4 million worth of private donations.

This month, Nashua Director of Economic Development Tim Cummings said efforts to raise this money are still in the works.

“It will be a multi-pronged approach with looking to have corporate sponsorship, high-net-worth individuals, foundations, grants and tax credits,” he said of the planned fundraising efforts.

In June, city leaders agreed to pay a fundraising consultant about $50,000 to help with the project. That money was to be drawn from the Downtown Improvement Fund, which consists of parking meter revenue.

City officials have said they cannot break ground with construction until securing the $4 million in private funds.

We wish city officials the best in the effort to raise the private funds because we believe a downtown performing arts center would be a positive development for Nashua.

We do, however, as always, ask them to maintain fiscal responsibility in this matter.
