Esther Wanjiku Gitau Mwaura

Apr 10, 2026

Esther Wanjiku Gitau Mwaura (October 10, 1962 – March 30, 2026) It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Esther Wanjiku Gitau Mwaura, affectionately known as “Mama Nduta,” who entered eternal rest on March 30, 2026, after a courageous battle with Stage 4 colon cancer.

Born in Kenya on October 10, 1962 to the late Pastor Isaac Gitau and his wife, freedom fighter Monica Wangechi, Esther was raised in a home rooted in faith, service, and resilience. She carried these values with her throughout her life. In Kenya, she began her pursuit of education, studying Accounting at Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology, eventually becoming a CPA at Egerton University. She also briefly taught business studies at Elgon View Commercial College in Eldoret. It was there, in 1987, that she walked into an office while preparing to look for a new job and met her future life partner, Joseph, who was substituting for his boss that day. It was as if fate knew these two were meant to meet. The love they nurtured in those early days grew into a 38-year marriage.

Esther immigrated to the United States with unwavering faith, determination, and a deep commitment to building a better life for her family and community. She pursued her calling in healthcare, attending Rivier College and becoming a registered nurse, where she was known for her compassion, dedication, and genuine love for her patients. She most recently worked as a psychiatric nurse, but throughout her career, she served at various facilities in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, including Greenbrier, Fairview, Courville, and most recently Harbor Care.

A woman of profound faith, Esther served faithfully in her church communities, including Hosana Gospel under the pastorate of Pastor Stanley Mungai, then Christian Bible Church under the pastorate of Gary Stearn, and most recently Well of Worship Center under the pastorate of Rev. Alice Ndungu in Dracut, Massachusetts, where she was a church elder, intercessor, and treasurer. Her life was a testament to servant leadership, generosity, and an unwavering belief in God.

Esther was deeply committed to uplifting others. Through her involvement in Women of Hope, she supported immigrant women as they navigated life in America, offering encouragement, guidance, and sisterhood. She was also passionate about gardening, often growing food in community gardens and donating it to those in need.

Above all, Esther was a devoted and loving mother. She was a guiding light not only to her biological children but also to many others in her community, opening her home as a place of refuge, love, and support. She lived by the words she often shared: “Where there is love, there is life.”

Esther is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph Mwaura Waweru; her children, Rosemary Nduta, George Waweru, Isaac Gitau, Michael Kariuki, and Peter Kariuki; her siblings, Margaret Wambui, Eunice Mumbi, Daniel Maina, and Jane Wangari; their dear spouses and Children, her in-laws and dear grandchildren, dear sisterhood within Women Of Hope, best friends including Christine Muthoni Kiam and Sarah mwangi Njau, church family though Well of Worship and Sisters of Zion and Men of Achievement, and loved ones in Kenya.

For two years, Esther fought her illness with extraordinary courage, enduring chemotherapy, surgeries, and immense physical challenges. Despite her suffering, she remained steadfast in her faith, her love for others, and her sense of humor.

Her passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her. Her legacy of love, service, and generosity will continue to inspire all whose lives she touched.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Well of Worship Center in Dracut, Massachusetts. A funeral service will take place on Monday, April 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Christian Bible Church in Nashua, New Hampshire.
