Jeanne Marie (Alton) Toms
Jeanne Marie (Alton) Toms, 82, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at Community Hospice House in Merrimack, New Hampshire, with her loving family by her side.
Jeanne was born on February 11, 1944, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late A.E. Alton Jr. and Florence Alton of Westford, Massachusetts. She attended Westford Academy and later built a life centered around family in Nashua, New Hampshire, hard work, and a good dose of humor. Jeanne retired from Southern NH Services after many dedicated years.
Jeanne had a creative spirit and loved sewing, quilting, and making all kinds of crafts. Many of her quilts were lovingly made for family and friends, and she often donated her work so others could enjoy the warmth she created. She was incredibly proud of her family and treasured every moment she could spend with them.
She had a wonderful stubborn streak and a sharp sense of humor that kept everyone on their toes. Jeanne enjoyed watching her soap opera, General Hospital, and everyone in the family knew better than to call during that time. She also had a well-known love/hate relationship with slot machines at the casino, where her colorful commentary was legendary even if she technically “didn’t swear.”
Jeanne cherished her trips to Canada and the many happy memories made there with Pat and George Merrill. She also enjoyed cruising with family and creating lasting memories with those she loved most, including her trips to Las Vegas to visit.
Jeanne was predeceased by her beloved son, Scott Douglas Toms; her sister Patricia Jefferson; her brother Arthur Alton III; her sister Carole Alton; her brother-in-law George Merrill; and her sister-in-law Pat Merrill.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Nance Gillies, husband Jeff. Her son, John Toms (affectionately known in the family as the “golden boy”) and his wife Lisa. She also leaves behind her sisters Elizabeth Holt, Marjorie Vargas and husband Albert, her brother Philip Alton and his wife Irene. Jeanne is also survived by her daughter-in-law Heather Toms.
Jeanne was a proud grandmother to Josh (and his fiancé Erica), Hannah, Dan (and his wife Cassidy), Jared (and his wife Bailey), Christa, Jakob, and Michael. She was also the cherished great-grandmother of Kirby and Axel. In addition, she leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her warmth, humor, and strong personality.
Jeanne’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She loved each of them deeply and was endlessly proud of the lives they were building. Her love, laughter, and unmistakable personality will live on in the stories and memories shared by all who knew her.
SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held on March 11, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock Street Nashua, NH 03064. A funeral service will follow from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM. Burial will take place immediately afterward at Woodlawn Cemetery 101 Kinsley Street, Nashua, NH 03060. Family and friends are invited to attend.
Jeanne will be remembered for her strength, her humor, her creativity, and the fierce love she had for her family. The crafts she made, the laughs she shared, and the memories she created will continue to wrap those she loved in warmth for years to come.
