Robert William Hayes

Mar 18, 2026

Robert William Hayes, 93, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on March 5, 2026.

Robert was a brilliant engineer whose work left a lasting mark. Over the course of his career, he worked with GE, NASA, Tufts University, and the University of New Hampshire, focusing on satellites, some of which are still in use today. He was deeply intelligent, curious, and talented, and took great pride in the work he did.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Robert found joy in life’s simpler pleasures. In more recent years, he enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and sharing that passion with his grandsons, patiently teaching them about the craft. He also loved traveling overseas through Europe with his beloved wife, Patricia, enjoying time at their homes in Lancaster and Sarasota, and making memories with their grandchildren.

Robert and Patricia shared a love that was deeply admirable and increasingly rare to witness. Together they built a life centered on family, partnership, and adventure, raising four children and creating a legacy that lives on through those who knew and loved them.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Hayes; his sons, Douglas Hayes and Robert “Buffy” Hayes Jr.; his brother, Richard “Dickie” Hayes; and his sister-in-law, Barbara “Auntie” Hayes.

He is survived by his daughter, Tamara Wood; his son, Stephen Hayes; his niece, Barbara Pappas; his grandchildren, Casey Hayes, Richard Hayes, Justin Hayes, Theresa Hayes, Johnathan Hayes, and Nathan Hayes; along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A private ceremony will be held by the family.

Robert — or Bob, Gramps, or Hayes, depending on how you knew him — was as witty as they come. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
