Ernest A. Keeler

Ernest A. Keeler, 83, of Nashua, NH, passed away from his Physical World for the Spirit World on Tuesday evening, December 16, 2025 after a brief illness.

Born in Woodsville, NH on February 8, 1942, Ernie was the son of the late Adell E. (Hesseltine) Keeler Hannett of Wells River and Brattleboro, VT and the late Frederick E. Ayers of Lyndonville, VT.

Growing up in Wells River, VT, Bethel and Ashland, ME, Concord, NH and finally Brattleboro, VT, Ernie attended Brattleboro Union High School. Leaving school at 17 to join the U.S. Navy on June 30, 1959, and a too serious relationship!

He served First Duty Station after Great Lakes Training Camp was the U.S. Navy Icebreaker; U.S.S. EDISTO AGB-2 Homeported in East Boston, MA. Serving a little over four years, four trips to the North Atlantic and two trips to the South Pole, Escorting Supply ships to the Bases on the Ice Shelf (Ross). On his last trip to Antarctica, he and the crew (roughly 225) witnessed “Little America Five” falling into the ocean, 225 sailors started crying, as there was a Quonset hut full of beer from all over the world, and we couldn’t save one can.

Upon his discharge and returning home, after 90 days he was back in the Navy. Six months on the U. S. S. Wasp CVS 18 in Dry Dock in South Boston, MA. He was transferred to the U.S.S. Tallahatchie County AVB-2 (Home Ported Naples, Italy from 1964-66; then to U.S.S. Raleigh (LPD-1) June 1967; training for Vietnam at Long Beach, California and served in Vietnam from August 1967 to August 1968, Patrol Boat Captain with the rank of Seaman Second Class. In September 1968, Ernie was assigned to the U.S.S. Guide MSO-447, San Diego, CA and honorably discharged on January 10, 1969. He flew home to Brattleboro, VT and then moved to Hudson, NH, where he worked as a truck driver for Hudson Sand & Gravel (Brox) for 26 years. Ernie also worked hauling over-sized loads for J.F. Lomma in the United States and Canada; and worked for N.F.I. for seven years.

Ernie met the love of his life, Carla E. Davis in 1971 and moved into 1 Second Street where they resided together. Thirteen years later, they bought a house on Burke Street in Nashua and got married in 1983. The couple shared 37 years together until Carla’s passing on June 12, 2020. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Ronald Keeler of Concord, NH and Sgt. Howard S. Keeler of Phoenix City, AL; his sisters, Coleen Keeler Knowles and family, and Norma Keeler (Leonard) Canuel and family of Hudson, NH; step-son, Jeff Davis and step-daughters, Lisa J.K. Dube and Karen Davis Cyr.

He is survived by his step children, Roy B. Davis and Tammy of Columbia, SC, Debora Davis of Nashua. His biological daughter, Patti Fitzgerald Brown of Plymouth, MA; granddaughter, Keegan Brown of Austin, TX and grandson, Collin Brown of Minneapolis, MN.; also nieces and nephews.

A Graveside service and Navy Funeral Honors will take place at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway in Boscawen, Monday, December 29th at 11 a.m. Family and friends are invited to attend.
