Sheila Doreen Howling

Sheila Doreen (Johnston) Howling of Amherst, NH passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2025 at 100 years old.
Sheila was born on September 26, 1925 in Calcutta, India. She was the youngest child of James and Dorothy (Trump) Johnston. She attended The Lawrence School in Lovedale in Southern India. Following her graduation, she enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Corp of the British Army, serving in India during the Second World War. It was during this time that she met and married her husband Dennis Howling. Following their marriage, they moved to England where they started a family. They then moved to the United States where they eventually found a home in Massachusetts and raised their four children.
Sheila was a devoted wife who shared a profound love and partnership with her husband. She was also a loving mother and full-time homemaker who created a warm and nurturing home for her family. Her greatest joy and life’s work was her family, a love that only grew as she became a grandmother and great-grandmother. She also enjoyed traveling, exploring both new regions and cultures and connecting with old friends and family around the world.
Sheila will be remembered for her deep love of family and friends, passion for travel and culture, and her many stories of a life lived richly for 100 years. She will be deeply missed and eternally loved by all who knew her.
Sheila is survived by her four children Susie Collins, Peter (Lois) Howling, Sally (Richard) Goodnow, and Paul Howling, as well as her seven grandchildren and her twelve great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Dennis, her parents, and her five siblings.
