Andy Hoar

Aug 13, 2025

Andy Hoar died suddenly, post-surgery, at Southern New Hampshire Hospital in Nashua, NH August 5th. Born in Mineola, NY August 20th, 1955, Andy lived in Lloyd Harbor until he graduated from Cold Spring Harbor High School. He received his degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.

Friends and co-workers have described Andy as “Everyone’s Valium” because of his ability to diffuse situations with his sense of humor and irony. Yet within that quiet exterior there was a mind that relished problem solving, whether the problem was a tricky town zoning matter or how to make computer chips work faster, better, longer and cheaper. Professionally he received the most enjoyment from finding solutions to seemingly unsolvable engineering problems. Because of this he was a rare and respected R and D team member for companies from Wang and Apollo to Masscomp/Concurrent, DEC, Marconi, Ericsson and finally AMD, with a few startups in between.

One of the things he loved most was to sail the Maine coast with his brother Derek and sister, Jennifer. Perkin’s Cove mussels were a favorite treats. He took great pride in seeing how many miles per gallon he could get in his Prius. He also enjoyed time spent with his sons, Braden, Damon and Zander Reyna to sharing books, music from blues and bluegrass to opera, theater, swimming, hiking, serving his town of Wilton, NH in whatever capacity arose, discussing national and international politics and affairs from both historical and anthropological perspectives and 40 years of marriage with his wife, Gail.

He left his brother Derek, sister Jennifer, brother and sister-in-law Todd and Nancy Cochran, his children and wife, and his 8 grandchildren: Lexus and Adaire Reyna ( Braden), Cameron and Chase Reyna and step-granddaughter Emerald Mundt (Damon and Brenda) and Ellie, William and Finn Reyna-Lalier(Zander and Kate) and five nephews and nieces, Rory Stark, Sophie and Griffin Nargi, Carrie Cochran (Tony)Mclain and Ian Cochran (Adam Gordon). Andy will also be missed by many friends, neighbors, town officials for his years of work on the ZBA and other organizations and former team members from his various jobs.

There will be no immediate service, but a future gathering of remembrance is possible. Donations in Andy’s name may be made to the NPR/PBS station or stations of your choice or Wilton, New Hampshire’s Andy’s Summer Playhouse theater.
