Dr. Alan J. Green

Dr. Alan J. Green, 79, of Nashua, passed away peacefully on July 27 at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. He succumbed to Myeloid Dysplasia Syndrome with superimposed Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 25, 1946, son of the late Ira Green and Shirley (Sobelsohn) Green. Alan was the beloved husband of Dr. Rebecca (Smith) Green.
A graduate of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Alan completed his internship and OB/GYN residency in Wilmington, DE. From 1972 to 1974, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a Major at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, where he also trained and served as a certified Jewish Lay Leader through the Jewish Welfare Board, assisting the Jewish military community at nearby Great Lakes Naval Training Center.
In 1977, Alan and Becky moved to Nashua, where they joined Matthew Thornton Health Plan and later opened a private OB/GYN practice together. For over three decades, they worked side by side to improve the quality and safety of women’s healthcare and fertility treatment at Southern NH Medical Center (formerly Nashua Memorial Hospital). Alan was a firm supporter of women’s reproductive rights and was widely regarded as a warm and caring obstetrician/gynecologist who provided excellent care to his many, many patients over the years.
He became an integral member of the Jewish community at Temple Beth Abraham, holding numerous leadership roles and contributing as a dedicated member of the Chevra Kadisha and cemetery committee. Alan was also widely respected for his lifelong work as a mohel, having trained through both the Reform and Conservative Movements. He performed brit milah ceremonies throughout New England and led many educational discussions on the subject for students, adults, and medical professionals. Alan retired from medical practice in 2012 after 35 years of service but continued performing britot for families in the community until stopped by his illness.
Alan’s friends and family will remember him as a funny, caring, and deeply generous man who was passionate about many things in life: the proper way to crush a clove of garlic, the quantity of vermouth in a gin martini, the most efficient way to load a dishwasher. He loved the outdoors, especially gardening, birdwatching, fishing, and canoeing. A talented musician, Alan played the clarinet and saxophone as a founding member of the Raymond Street Klezmer Band. Music played a central role in Alan’s life, whether Bob Dylan, Paul
Simon, or John Prine, and he proudly passed his love and talent for music to his children and grandchildren.
Alan is survived by his wife of many years, Rebecca Green; his children Erica Goodman and her husband Joshua of Washington, Nieta Shapiro and her husband Stephen of Pennsylvania, Shoshana Green of Massachusetts, Zachary Green and his wife Patricia Lomando of Massachusetts, and Ariella Green of Massachusetts; his beloved grandchildren Adam Goodman, Nora Goodman, Daniel Goodman, Benjamin Shapiro, Ian Shapiro, and Andre Green King; his brother Barry Green and his wife Miriam of Virginia; two nephews; and several cousins.
